Spain became the new world number one in the FIFA rankings published on 20 July, one day after beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The men's team added 121.17 points to claim the top spot, with Luis de la Fuente's side having also won Euro 2024. Argentina dropped to second after the final defeat.
Germany fell to 12th following their round-of-16 exit to Paraguay, while Morocco reached sixth, their highest-ever position. Mexico entered the top 10 and Switzerland rose five places to 14th.
Norway climbed 12 spots to 19th after reaching the quarter-finals, overtaking Denmark, who sit 21st. Spain's women's team remains world number one, a position held since their 2023 World Cup win.
