Sony Group and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company are planning to invest approximately 1 trillion yen ($6.3 billion) in a joint venture to produce next-generation image sensor chips in Japan. The partnership, owned roughly 60% by Sony and 40% by TSMC, targets commercial production as early as 2029 at Sony Semiconductor Solutions' existing facility in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The two technology giants announced plans in May to establish the venture to develop and manufacture high-performance camera sensors. Sony, the world's largest image sensor maker with a 43.4% global market share in 2025, is partnering with TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker.

TSMC reported July 2026 net revenue of NT$467.58 billion, up 44.7% year-on-year. Sony declined to comment on the Nikkei report, and TSMC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
