The Russian captain of a Norwegian-owned cargo ship has been detained on suspicion of negligent seamanship and causing death following a collision that killed a mother and daughter near the island of Tjörn, north of Gothenburg.

The 90-metre bulk carrier Misje Verde struck a small motorboat late Tuesday evening while en route from Uddevalla to Kragerø. The leisure boat, carrying a family of four, sank immediately on impact. The father and son survived with injuries, while bodies of the mother and daughter were recovered on Thursday. A Swedish pilot was also aboard the cargo vessel at the time.

Prosecutor James von Reis, who is leading the investigation, ordered the captain's arrest at 18:30 on Thursday. The Swedish Accident Investigation Board has opened a parallel inquiry. Prosecutors must decide by Sunday noon whether to seek pre-trial detention.
