A 44-year-old Italian tourist was hospitalised on Saturday after a driverless tourist train rolled out of control through the historic centre of Toledo, Spain, striking him before crashing into a retaining wall near the Alcázar.
The incident occurred around 14:44 local time at the junction of Calle Unión and Cuesta de los Capuchinos, where the parked, empty train began moving on its own down a slope. Emergency responders cited a possible brake failure as the train descended uncontrollably, hitting the man and ultimately colliding with the wall of the Corralillo de San Miguel gardens. The victim suffered an open wound to one arm and was taken by mobile intensive care unit to Toledo University Hospital, where his condition was reported as stable.
Firefighters removed the wreckage with a crane, and local and national police have opened an investigation into how the vehicle set itself in motion while parked and unoccupied.
