Violent unrest swept across France after the national team lost to Spain in the men's World Cup semi-final, with 342 people arrested in nearly 200 cities as clashes broke out between police and crowds on Tuesday night. In Grenoble, a 49-year-old man watching the match on a bar terrace was chased and fatally shot by attackers.
Officers were fired upon with fireworks in 688 incidents, and 701 cars were torched nationwide across Tuesday night and the previous night, which coincided with Bastille Day celebrations that had already seen violence in 141 cities.
In Paris alone, police detained 98 people, including 21 minors held mostly on suspicion of theft or possession of flammable materials. Authorities had deployed 2,000 additional officers and restricted fireworks sales and public drinking ahead of the match, which fell on France's national holiday.
