France will deploy some 70,000 police officers and gendarmes nationwide on Tuesday to secure Bastille Day celebrations and the World Cup semifinal against Spain, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced in a television interview.
Around 5,000 officers will be stationed in Paris alone, where the Champs-Élysées military parade will be President Emmanuel Macron's last as head of state. Nuñez warned that authorities would tolerate no disturbances during what is expected to be a volatile mix of national holiday festivities and high-stakes football. Many municipalities have cancelled fireworks displays due to heatwave and drought conditions.
Security forces remain on edge after 89 arrests during the quarterfinal victory over Morocco, which also saw the death of a 17-year-old girl in northern France, and widespread riots in late May following Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League win that left 178 officers injured. Tensions were further stoked by controversial remarks from former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy criticizing the diversity of the French national squad.
