Portuguese prosecutors have opened a formal investigation into the death of 19-year-old Welsh cyclist Finlay Tarling, with the inquiry filed at the Ponte de Lima public prosecutor's office and an autopsy ordered after he died during Friday's eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal.
Details of the collision have emerged: Tarling struck a van not affiliated with race organisation that was travelling in the opposite direction. The driver had pulled over from a side road, waited for the main peloton to pass, and was told by spectators the course was clear before proceeding. Police said the driver tested negative for alcohol and drugs and is not expected to face charges.
The tragedy has drawn sharp criticism. The riders' union Cyclistes Professionnels Associés condemned the death and demanded safety improvements, while former French professional Jérôme Pineau called the race's security arrangements "catastrophic". Tarling had placed 11th in the race's opening stage.
