OpenAI has rolled out ChatGPT for Teens, a version of its chatbot with built-in protections for users aged 13 to 17. The teen mode activates automatically when the company estimates a user falls within that age range, based on declared birthdate or chat behaviour.
The update restricts content related to self-harm, violence, eating disorders and explicit material, while introducing regular break reminders and a study mode that responds with guiding questions rather than direct answers. Parents can link accounts and receive notifications during high-risk conversations. The voice function can be switched off for younger users.
The launch comes as OpenAI faces multiple lawsuits alleging the software harmed minors, including cases linked to youth suicides and school shootings. The move also coincides with Meta facing legal action from four US states over teen mental health.
