Denmark mandates oral defences and firewalls to curb AI cheating in schools

Denmark will require secondary-school students to orally defend their written work and block AI websites with firewalls during lessons and exams, under measures the government says are needed to tackle rising artificial-intelligence fraud in classrooms.

Education Minister Magnus Heunicke said immediate action was necessary, calling AI-driven cheating a problem that demands a response now. The rules apply to students aged 16 to 19 at gymnasiet, Denmark's upper-secondary programme, where pupils will have to defend their major annual written assignments before examiners. Schools will also be required to deploy monitoring tools to supervise computer use during written tests.

Copenhagen is preparing a broader national strategy for AI use in education. The announcement drew a mixed response from the Danish Upper Secondary Students' Union. Separately, Portugal has created a working group dedicated to digital technology and AI in education.
