A quarter of all road accidents in Belgium that leave a pedestrian injured or killed are followed by a hit-and-run, making walkers the group most disproportionately affected by drivers fleeing the scene, according to a study by the Vias road safety institute.
In 2025, 4,814 injury accidents involved a hit-and-run, nearly 200 more than the previous year and an 8% rise over the past decade. The incidents left 20 people dead, 200 seriously injured and 5,077 with minor injuries, totalling 5,297 victims. Cyclists were struck in 1,819 cases, while e-scooter and moped riders also saw significant flight rates of 15% and 12% respectively.
Federal Mobility Minister Jean-Luc Crucke described the figures as worrying. About 85% of hit-and-run offenders were identified in 2025, up from 78% in 2016.
