A cyberattack on Japanese frozen-food giant Nichirei has rippled through the country's restaurant and retail industries, forcing major chains to curtail operations and warning of product shortages.
Nichirei disclosed the unauthorized system access on July 13, saying the breach disrupted warehouse operations and frozen-food shipments nationwide. No customer or personal data leakage has been confirmed, and the impact is limited to domestic operations. However, the fallout has spread across the food-service and retail sectors: KFC Japan announced reduced hours or possible temporary closures at select outlets, AEON reported shortages of certain frozen products, and Kura Sushi said deliveries of sushi toppings and other ingredients were delayed or undelivered.
Nichirei Logistics, the company's distribution arm, operates roughly 140 logistics centers and a fleet of about 7,000 trucks across Japan, underscoring the scale of the disruption.
