Japanese payment processor Zentoushin files for bankruptcy with $710 million in debts

· Business JPN

Zentoushin, a major Japanese payment processor serving roughly 200,000 restaurants and retailers, has filed for bankruptcy in Osaka District Court with liabilities of about 115.2 billion yen ($710 million), leaving tens of thousands of small businesses unpaid and triggering a regulatory review.

The collapse threatens 63 creditors holding claims worth some $709 million. Kinki Sangyo Shinkin Bank faces a potential loss on 12.45 billion yen in outstanding loans, while Tokyo Star Bank and Towa Bank each held roughly 8 billion yen in exposure. The Financial Services Agency has begun assessing lending conditions at regional banks and shinkin banks, though it considers the systemic impact on the broader financial sector to be limited.

The fallout is hitting small restaurants hardest. A survey by the Japan Food Service Association found that 68.3% of respondents have not received owed sales revenue, with the average loss per outlet at 600,000 yen and nearly seven in ten reporting worsening cash flow.
