NATO intern suspected of spying for China appeals pretrial detention in Belgium

· Society BELCANCHN

A Canadian woman arrested on suspicion of spying at NATO's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe has appealed her one-month pretrial detention, with Belgium's indictment chamber required to rule within two weeks.

The suspect, identified as Claire Z., is in her early 30s and worked in SHAPE's IT department, having started her internship more than a year ago. Belgian justice officials suspect the woman of Chinese origin was working on behalf of China, according to sources close to the case.

NATO security services first flagged the suspect to Belgium's military intelligence agency before authorities raided her Mons residence and SHAPE office. The woman remains held on charges of espionage for a third country and membership in a criminal organisation.
