A 48-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly stabbing his wife to death in their home in Alameda de la Sagra, a town in the province of Toledo, central Spain. The attack took place around 5:16 a.m. at a residence on Plaza de España, where the couple lived with three of their four children, one of them a minor.

The victim, a 45-year-old Ecuadorean national, was married to the suspect, a Spanish national of Ecuadorean origin, the Spanish Civil Guard said. The woman was not registered in Spain's VioGén domestic-violence monitoring system and there were no prior complaints or records of similar incidents involving the couple.

If confirmed as a gender-based violence case, the killing would bring the toll to 31 women murdered in Spain in 2026 and 1,371 since official records began in 2003.
