SC Magdeburg claimed the German handball Supercup with a 38-31 victory over Füchse Berlin on Friday, ending a 25-year wait for the trophy. The win in Munich gave head coach Bennet Wiegert his first Supercup title in four attempts, adding to the club's previous triumphs in 1996 and 2001.
Magdeburg trailed only once at 0-1 before seizing control in front of a sold-out crowd of 10,199 at the SAP Garden. Gísli Kristjánsson was flawless from the field, converting all nine shots, while Berlin's Mathias Gidsel led all scorers with 10 goals. Magdeburg led by as many as eight goals late in the second half.
Both teams now turn to the Bundesliga season. Magdeburg open at VfL Gummersbach on Aug. 30, while Berlin host MT Melsungen on Aug. 27. In the women's Supercup, HSG Blomberg-Lippe beat Borussia Dortmund 26-24 in a penalty shootout.
