Lithuania's parliament approved the programme of Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius on Monday, clearing the way for a new centre-left coalition to take office with a 75-seat majority in the 141-member Seimas. Lawmakers voted 72 in favour and 29 against, with four abstentions, installing the country's first left-leaning government in years.
The coalition — comprising the Social Democratic Party, the Democratic Union "For Lithuania", and the Lithuanian Farmers and Greens Union — replaces the Dawn of Nemunas party, which sat in the two previous cabinets. Opposition lawmakers challenged procedural aspects of the vote and signalled a potential appeal to the Constitutional Court.
The new cabinet has pledged to keep defence spending above 5% of GDP and to maintain continued support for Ukraine while seeking to restore normal diplomatic ties with China. The previous government led by Inga Ruginienė resigned on 23 June.
