Moldovan President Maia Sandu nominated businessman Vasile Tofan as prime minister on Friday, tasking him with steering the country's push to join the European Union and reviving an economy shaken by political turmoil.
The nomination of Tofan, a 44-year-old senior partner at Horizon Capital, follows consultations with parliamentary factions and was put forward by the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity, though Tofan himself is not a party member. Sandu said the new government must also strengthen institutional resilience alongside the EU integration drive. He has 15 days to form a cabinet and seek a confidence vote in parliament.
The post fell vacant after former Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu resigned on July 3 amid a corruption scandal involving the state aviation safety authority MoldATSA.
