Lithuania and Latvia raised alarms on Tuesday about Russian sabotage operations targeting critical infrastructure in the Baltic region, prompting Vilnius to order tightened security at energy and transport facilities.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said intelligence services had detected plans for attacks on critical infrastructure, though the information lacked specifics on timing or location. Latvian President Edgars Rinkevičs, speaking alongside Nausėda at a joint press conference in Vilnius, said intelligence from Lithuania and other NATO allies pointed to Russian sabotage efforts. The warnings follow a similar alert by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk earlier this month.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the accusations, calling them a pretext for NATO military expansion. Lithuania has tripled its defence spending since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
