Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane has placed a €2 billion order with Hitachi Rail for 19 new high-speed trains, as the Italian state railway moves to launch a Paris-London service by 2029 in direct competition with Eurostar.
Ten of the trains will operate on the Channel Tunnel route to the United Kingdom, while the remaining nine will strengthen existing services between Paris and Lyon, Milan, and Marseille. The deal includes construction of an €80 million maintenance facility at Maisons-Alfort Pompadour near Paris. US investment firm Certares is backing the expansion.
The move comes as rival operator Italo announced a separate €3.6 billion investment in 26 Siemens-built high-speed trains, targeting German routes including Munich-Cologne and Munich-Berlin-Hamburg from mid-2028.
