Iran has summoned the French ambassador to protest what it called interference in its internal affairs following the detention of two French diplomats in Tehran on 19 July 2026. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei accused the pair of unjustifiable activities and violations of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
The European Union condemned the treatment of the diplomats, with EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas calling the action a flagrant breach of the Vienna conventions. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the incident as an extremely serious act of intimidation, and one of the diplomats was reportedly physically mistreated.
Separately, Iran's foreign ministry denied any U.S. involvement in ongoing talks with Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz, saying the discussions are continuing and unrelated to Washington.
