Indonesian authorities intercepted a Tanzanian-flagged vessel carrying 2.6 tonnes of liquid methamphetamine in one of the country's largest drug seizures, the National Narcotics Agency confirmed.
The joint operation involving narcotics, customs, and police units secured the MV Ocean Porter on 17 August near Bengkalis, Riau province. The vessel, previously known as the MV Rain Maker, was intercepted following intelligence that narcotics were being transported from Sarawak, Malaysia. Ten Myanmar nationals were detained as crew members.
The methamphetamine was hidden in eight barrels and a water tank, along with more than 1.5 million untaxed cigarettes suspected to originate from China. This marked the second Tanzanian-flagged vessel seized in the area during August, following the confiscation of 1.3 tonnes of ketamine from another ship earlier in the month.
