Greek mayor and contractor detained over deadly wildfire near Athens

· Environment GRC

Greek authorities have detained the mayor of Stylida, Giannis Apostolou, and two other suspects on charges of arson and destruction of public infrastructure linked to a wildfire that scorched more than 10,000 hectares west of Athens. Investigators believe the blaze was sparked by a power cable near Agios Vasileios, fanned by winds reaching up to 130 km/h toward Mount Kithairon. Apostolou owns an electrical installation firm connected to a wind park in the affected zone, and a subcontractor and the wind park's owner also face charges carrying potential sentences exceeding ten years. The fire damaged more than 120 buildings in Porto Germeno, and volunteers rescued hundreds of animals during mass evacuations.
