Two firefighters were found dead in their truck near Rethymno on Crete as a 15-kilometre fire front swept through the region on Wednesday, authorities said. Around 190 firefighters, 40 vehicles and eight water-dropping aircraft were deployed to the island, where at least eight villages have been evacuated. A 71-year-old man also died in connection with a separate blaze near Kozani in northern Greece.
On the island of Lesbos, travel agency Apollo evacuated roughly 90 Norwegian tourists along with 134 Swedes and 74 Danes from hotels in the village of Plomari around 14:00 local time. Guests were directed to nearby beaches and the evacuation order was lifted by 19:30. Fires also burned on the island of Paros.
Across Greece, 37 new wildfires broke out in the past 24 hours.
