The Munich Regional Court has ruled largely in favour of GEMA in its copyright lawsuit against music-generation company Suno AI, ordering Suno to cease reproducing specific musical works without consent, including during AI model training. The verdict is not yet legally binding and may be appealed.
GEMA, which represents more than 95,000 music creators in Germany and over two million rights holders worldwide, filed the suit in January 2025, arguing Suno trained its models on copyrighted music without licences or compensation. During the trial, GEMA demonstrated that Suno generated songs resembling well-known tracks including 'Forever Young,' 'Mambo No. 5,' and 'Daddy Cool.' Suno contested the similarity claims, stating the works were not stored in its model.
GEMA won a related case against OpenAI last year before the same court, a ruling that was later appealed. Suno AI generates roughly seven million songs per day globally.
