German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a cabinet reshuffle on Thursday, removing Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder from his post as he continues to overhaul his government.
Schnieder, a member of Merz's Christian Democratic Union, must vacate the transport portfolio, with financial policy lawmaker Fritz Güntzler tipped as his successor. Güntzler, a Bundestag member since 2013 and deputy chairman of the CDU in Lower Saxony, is expected to take over the ministry. Merz did not announce a final decision on the transport post during his morning briefing.
The reshuffle extends beyond the transport ministry. Nina Warken is set to move to the Chancellery, while Carsten Linnemann is slated to become health minister. The changes follow the recent departure of CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn, who resigned over a surrogacy scandal.
