German conservative leader Jens Spahn becomes father via US surrogate

Jens Spahn, the parliamentary group leader of Germany's conservative CDU/CSU bloc, and his husband Daniel Funke have become parents to a son named Georg, born via surrogate mother in the United States. The couple confirmed the birth to Bild ahead of Wednesday's announcement.

Spahn and Funke are currently staying in the United States and plan to remain there until early August, the report said. Funke is understood to be the child's genetic father, and the surrogate is expected to remain part of the child's life going forward.

Surrogacy arrangements remain prohibited under German law, prompting some citizens to seek the procedure abroad. Spahn, a prominent figure in the Christian Democratic Union, has long been one of Germany's most visible openly gay politicians.
