Paris police have arrested a 23-year-old man who admitted he intended to set fire to the Bois de Boulogne, a large park on the western edge of the capital, authorities said.

Officers were called to the park around 23:00 on Friday, 17 July 2026, where they found a small blaze that had scorched roughly one square metre of vegetation and blackened a tree trunk before it was extinguished. The suspect, born in 2002, was placed in police custody and his detention was extended on Saturday, 18 July.

The incident comes as the wider Paris region grapples with severe wildfires; blazes in the nearby Fontainebleau forest have burned approximately 2,200 hectares.
