The Alternative for Germany has reached a record 28 percent in the ARD-Deutschlandtrend, gaining one percentage point since early July and widening its lead over Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic bloc, which fell to 21 percent — its weakest showing since November 2021. The Greens held at 15 percent, the Social Democrats polled 12 percent, and the Left 11 percent, while the FDP and BSW remained below the five-percent threshold.
Public dissatisfaction with the government runs deep: 85 percent of respondents said they were unhappy with the government's work, and 84 percent expressed dissatisfaction with Merz personally. A recent cabinet reshuffle — which saw Nina Warken take over the Chancellery from Thorsten Frei — inspired little confidence, with 57 percent expecting governance to remain just as poor.
Attitudes toward the AfD remain divided: 37 percent reject any cooperation with the party, while 27 percent broadly support it. Infratest dimap surveyed roughly 1,300 eligible voters between August 3 and 5, with a margin of error of two to three percentage points.
