The Alternative for Germany has taken first place in a Berlin opinion poll for the first time, securing 19% support in an Insa survey of 1,000 residents conducted July 14–21, seven weeks before the state election on September 20.
The Christian Democratic Union and The Left each drew 18% in the poll, while the Greens reached 16% and the Social Democrats 13%. Both the Free Democratic Party and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance fell below the 5% threshold required for representation.
The race has been reshaped by the CDU's leadership change after incumbent Mayor Kai Wegner stepped down as lead candidate on July 11, with Stefan Evers replacing him atop the party ticket.
