Relatives of the 43 people killed in the 2018 Morandi bridge collapse in Genoa have proposed distributing rubble from the disaster to the victims' hometowns to create a "dispersed museum" as a lasting memorial, committee president Egle Possetti said on the eve of the eighth anniversary.
Commemorations on Thursday included a Mass and a ceremony at the memorial clearing, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni absent and the government represented by Deputy Infrastructure Minister Edoardo Rixi, a decision Possetti criticised. Mayor Silvia Salis opened a photography exhibition at Palazzo Tursi.
The anniversary follows a first-instance verdict on July 16 that sentenced 32 defendants to nearly 180 years in prison, including 12 years for former Autostrade per l'Italia CEO Giovanni Castellucci. Compensatory works worth over 1.68 billion euros were agreed, though projects valued at 1.13 billion euros remain unbuilt.
