Italian President Sergio Mattarella attended a ceremony in Andria on Sunday to mark the 10th anniversary of a head-on train collision that killed 23 people and injured 51 on the single-track Andria–Corato line.
The memorial service near Andria station included a minute of silence at 11:05, 23 bell tolls and the reading of each victim's name. A local square was renamed Largo 12 luglio 2016 in honour of the dead. Andria Mayor Giovanna Bruno said the victims died because of specific responsibilities, not fate, and called for a national law mandating remembrance.
The crash occurred on a line operated by Ferrotramviaria using a telephone-block system, and courts in first and second instance attributed the cause to human error. Apulia Governor Antonio Decaro said the disaster left a wound that will never heal.
