A 16-year-old moped rider sustained minor injuries Friday afternoon after swerving to avoid an escaped Barbary macaque on a rural road in the Kyffhäuser district of central Germany.
The teenager crashed on the country road between Straußberg and Kleinfurra, near the local summer toboggan run, and was lightly hurt in the fall. Authorities estimate property damage at roughly 2,500 euros.
The monkey, which had escaped from the Affenwald Straußberg animal park, was uninjured and fled into the adjacent forest. The animal's owner arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and expressed regret over the incident.
