German CDU lawmaker Thomas Bareiß seriously injured in car crash

Christian Democratic Union member of parliament Thomas Bareiß was seriously injured in a car accident on Sunday near Hechingen in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg. The collision occurred on the B27 federal highway on 12 July.

Bareiß, 51, was trapped in his vehicle after it overturned and had to be freed by firefighters before being airlifted to a hospital in Tübingen. He is conscious and his injuries are not life-threatening. The driver and two passengers in the other vehicle were also injured. Property damage is estimated at around 35,000 euros.

The exact cause of the crash remains unclear, and an expert has been called in to reconstruct the sequence of events. Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche expressed her concern and wished Bareiß a swift recovery.
