A barking dog distracted a drunk driver and his passenger so severely that their car plunged roughly 20 metres down a steep, rocky embankment in Austria's Zillertal valley on Saturday.

The 46-year-old German national, from the Augsburg district, told police the dog began barking as he entered a left-hand curve on a mountain road in Aschau im Zillertal. Both he and his 42-year-old female passenger turned toward the animal before the vehicle left the roadway. The pair sustained only minor injuries in the crash.

Tyrol police confiscated the man's driving licence. Firefighters later recovered the wrecked vehicle from the hillside.
