The Football Association of England is set to withdraw support for Gianni Infantino's re-election as FIFA president, joining Wales, which became the first association to officially pull its backing for the 2027–2031 term. Sweden followed Wales in withdrawing support on Monday, while Finland was the first member association to publicly retract its endorsement last Thursday.
The backlash follows Infantino's abandoned plan to sell a minority stake in a new FIFA entity overseeing the World Cup to private investors, which aimed to raise up to $4.2 billion. UEFA and CONCACAF declared they had lost confidence in Infantino's leadership, and UEFA has threatened legal action and served a document preservation letter to FIFA.
Jordan FA President Ali bin Hussein accused Infantino of blackmail, alleging FIFA linked endorsements to institutional support. Infantino had announced in April his intention to seek a fourth term.
