FIFA has announced plans to create a new commercial entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise, seeking up to $4.2 billion from external investors in exchange for minority stakes. The governing body said the venture, valued at approximately $20 billion, would consolidate the sale of broadcasting, sponsorship, ticketing, and licensing rights with tournament operations, generating over $10 billion in football development funding across four years.
The proposal triggered immediate condemnation from UEFA, which called the plan a line that should never be crossed and declared that the soul of football is not for sale. European nations are expected to hold an emergency meeting this week, with reports suggesting a potential boycott of FIFA tournaments if President Gianni Infantino proceeds. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham also criticized the move, saying football belongs to fans.
JP Morgan is advising on the proposal, while Thrive Capital is expected to lead the investor group. FIFA maintains it would retain sole control over governance and sporting decisions, though the plan requires approval from national associations and the FIFA Council.
