Drought and surging demand leave three Czech villages temporarily without tap water

· Environment CZE

Three villages in the Brno region of the Czech Republic temporarily ran out of tap water after prolonged drought and a sharp increase in consumption drained the local reservoir on Monday. The Voluntary Association of Municipalities of Domašovsko, which supplies drinking water to Domašov, Rudka and Říčky — home to roughly 1,500 residents — had urged people a week earlier to conserve water, avoid watering gardens, washing cars and filling pools. Instead, daily consumption rose by 60 to 80 cubic metres.

Association chairman Tomáš Pitrocha said water is now flowing again after the Vodárenská akciová společnost began trucking supplies to the depleted reservoir. Even the delivered water could not fully offset the surge in demand, he said.

The association had warned in late July that its well was yielding no water and the borehole had limited output, cautioning that household supplies would be cut off within days if consumption did not fall.
