A swarm of drones attacked the city of Engels in Russia's Saratov region overnight on July 16, 2026, targeting a key military air base that hosts Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers. The base, a cornerstone of Russia's long-range aviation fleet, reportedly caught fire during the assault.
Saratov Governor Roman Busargin confirmed the drone attack and damage to civilian infrastructure in Engels, while saying there were no casualties. Power outages were also reported across the city following the strikes. Independent OSINT analysts said one drone also struck a residential apartment building near the airfield.
The raid comes as Russian security services separately said they had thwarted planned drone swarm attacks on two other military airfields, seizing ground control stations and dozens of FPV drones equipped with Western-made guidance modules.
