Flavio Cobolli advanced to the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 on Tuesday, defeating Rafael Jodar 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 in the round of 16. The victory marks only the second Masters 1000 quarter-final of Cobolli's career, following his run in Madrid earlier this season.
Cobolli, who had never faced Jodar before, needed three sets to overcome the Spaniard after dropping the opener. He could meet Alexander Zverev in the next round if he defeats Tommy Paul.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old João Fonseca withdrew from the tournament citing discomfort on the left side of his abdomen. The Brazilian announced his withdrawal on Monday night, a day after beating Botic van de Zandschulp in his opening match. Fonseca, who had previously defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud before losing to Ben Shelton in an earlier Cincinnati appearance, is scheduled to compete at the US Open starting 30 August.
