Chinese human rights lawyer Wu Shaoping was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Wednesday in Mount Holly Springs, Pennsylvania, where he was working as an Amazon courier delivering packages at the time of his arrest.

Wu, who fled China in late 2019 after attending a meeting in Xiamen that became known as the "Xiamen gathering" case, entered the United States on a tourist visa and filed for political asylum in 2020. He has been held at the Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Pennsylvania since his detention.

An immigration court hearing is scheduled for 27 July. The arrest of a prominent rights lawyer who sought refuge in the United States has drawn attention to the treatment of Chinese asylum seekers amid heightened immigration enforcement.
