Human remains discovered on a glacier in the Swiss Alps may belong to two Belgian hikers who vanished 34 years ago, authorities said.
The bodies were found on the Trift glacier near Saas-Grund, the Valais cantonal police said, adding that identification documents recovered nearby point to the two missing Belgians. Families were notified in late July and have provided DNA samples for analysis.
The two men from the Kempen region set out on the morning of 4 September 1992 from the Weissmieshütte at 2,726 metres, heading toward the 4,017-metre summit of the Weissmies. Deteriorating weather forced them off course and multiple searches in the following months found only a backpack, with a subsequent 1994 search also yielding no results. Official confirmation awaits the DNA results.
