Bayer Leverkusen's teenage signing Kennet Eichhorn sidelined by metabolic disorder

Bayer Leverkusen will be without 17-year-old new signing Kennet Eichhorn for the foreseeable future after medical tests revealed a metabolic disorder requiring treatment.

The German midfielder joined Leverkusen from Hertha BSC this summer for a reported nine million euros, having made 19 appearances and scored one goal for Hertha's first team in the second division last season. Eichhorn's move was spurred by a meeting with Leverkusen head coach Carles Martínez, who travelled to Berlin specifically to recruit him, amid interest from Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Liverpool and RB Leipzig.

The diagnosis echoes a similar metabolic condition that affected Mario Götze in 2017, though details on Eichhorn's recovery timeline have not been disclosed.
