Apple cuts over 200 staff and shelves Vision Pro successor as it pivots to AI

· Technology USA

Apple has laid off more than 200 employees across multiple teams, including roughly 100 from the Vision Pro development group, as the company shifts its focus toward artificial intelligence and new device categories. The cuts also affected the Siri assistant team and the Intelligent Systems Experience division.

The restructuring marks a strategic retreat from the Vision Pro headset line, introduced in 2024. Apple has cancelled plans for a second-generation Vision Pro and a cheaper 'Vision Air' model, though it continues to develop visionOS and future headset technology. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects a display-less, AI-powered smart glasses accessory for iPhone next year.

Leadership changes accompany the pivot. John Ternus will take over as CEO from Tim Cook on September 1, while Mike Rockwell has been tasked with overhauling Siri. Paul Meade, Rockwell's predecessor in that role, left for OpenAI in June.
