The death toll from the capsizing of a government ferry on Lake Kariba has risen to at least 80 after rescuers pulled more bodies from the water on Sunday, authorities said, as the search for the missing continued on the vast reservoir straddling Zimbabwe and Zambia.
Eight additional bodies were recovered from the lake on Sunday, bringing the confirmed toll to 80, up from 68 reported a day earlier. Police have placed the toll at 84 after four more bodies were retrieved later in the day. The vessel, operated by the state-run Rural Infrastructure Development Agency, was approved for 90 passengers but carried well over that number when it overturned after being struck by heavy waves on Tuesday. President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster following the incident, and the government activated a national search-and-rescue response that included helicopter deployment.
