A fast-moving wildfire in Niebla, in the southern province of Huelva, has burned through 8,000 hectares, doubling in size in a single day and stretching across a 44-kilometre perimeter that spans six municipalities.
Authorities have evacuated 474 people and closed five roads as roughly 500 emergency personnel battle the blaze, including 250 troops from the Military Emergency Unit and 250 Infoca wildfire fighters, with up to 26 aircraft available for aerial operations. Crews plan to deploy backburning to slow the flames.
Meanwhile, in the eastern province of Castellón, a separate fire near Tírig has scorched 395 hectares, prompting shelter-in-place warnings for the town of Catí. Spain has recorded nearly 200,000 hectares burned and 40 major wildfires so far in 2026, well above last year's pace.
