Lightning storms spark four wildfires in eastern Spain, forcing evacuations and confinement

· Environment ESP

Four wildfires ignited by apparent dry lightning storms swept through the interior of Castellón province in eastern Spain on Friday, forcing the confinement of multiple towns and the evacuation of rural farmsteads.

Authorities escalated the emergency to level 2 and deployed the Military Emergency Unit alongside hundreds of regional firefighters. The blazes, which affected approximately 244 hectares, prompted emergency alerts ordering residents of Sierra Engarcerán and Catí to shelter in place. By Saturday evening, firefighters had stabilized the Sierra Engarcerán fire and the nearby Serra d'en Galcerán blaze was declared controlled, allowing displaced residents to return home.

Aerial units joined ground crews at dawn Sunday to battle the remaining active fire in Tírig, where difficult terrain hampered overnight containment efforts.
