The US Supreme Court declined on Monday to hear Donald Trump's appeal in the E. Jean Carroll sexual abuse and defamation case for a second time, making a $5 million jury verdict from 2023 final. The unsigned order rejected Trump's request to reconsider the court's initial denial in June, a type of petition the court almost never grants.
Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan said the unanimous verdict can no longer be challenged in any court. Carroll received roughly $5.6 million, including interest, after a Manhattan federal judge ordered the funds released in July. The lawsuit stemmed from an alleged 1996 sexual assault in a New York City department store dressing room.
Trump's legal team continues to appeal a separate $83.3 million defamation verdict from 2024, claiming presidential immunity. The Supreme Court has not yet set a date to act on that petition. Trump has denied all allegations of sexual abuse and defamation.
