President Donald Trump plans to ask the Supreme Court to reconsider its June 30 ruling that affirmed children born on U.S. soil are automatic citizens under the 14th Amendment's Citizenship Clause. Trump called the decision "wrong" and said he would immediately file for a rehearing. Rehearing petitions are rarely granted and must be submitted within 25 days of a ruling.
The June decision blocked Trump's January 2025 executive order, which had sought to deny citizenship documents to children of undocumented parents 30 days after taking effect. Trump also claimed on Truth Social that signs advertising "birthright citizenship" for $4,000 have appeared along the southern border and in Mexico.
Separately, a Manhattan judge on July 8 ordered $5 million plus interest that Trump posted as a bond in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case be paid to Carroll, despite the president's request for a stay.
