Secretary of State Marco Rubio is hosting a summit on far-left political terrorism in Washington today, drawing representatives from at least 65 countries. The conference follows a wave of U.S. designations targeting militant leftist networks across Europe.
Rubio pointed to recent attacks to underscore the threat, citing an arson-induced blackout in Berlin earlier this year that left 100,000 people without power, as well as sabotage of French rail lines ahead of the 2024 Olympics. He accused Cuba of fostering far-left movements across the Western Hemisphere and dismissed communism as flawed even in theory. The Trump administration recently described Europe as an "incubator of terrorist threats."
Since November 2025, the U.S. has designated four European groups as foreign terrorist organizations, including Germany's Antifa Ost, offering up to $10 million for information on their financing. Rubio announced the next anti-terrorism event will be held with partners in Germany.
