The United States extended its national emergency against Brazil for an additional year on Wednesday, keeping sanctions authority in place until at least July 2027. President Donald Trump originally declared the emergency in July 2025.
The Trump administration justified the renewal by asserting that Brazilian government policies pose an "unusual and extraordinary threat" to US national security, foreign policy, and the economy. The announcement cited actions by Brazil's Supremo Tribunal Federal, including internet content removals and arrests linked to protests, as examples of censorship. It also alleged political persecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro, his family, and supporters.
Alongside the emergency extension, the US designated the Primeiro Comando da Capital and Comando Vermelho as global terrorist organizations.
